Luton sits at roughly 160 metres above sea level, straddling the chalky Chiltern Hills to the south and the heavier London Clay formation to the north. That split geology is the single biggest factor in why some roads here fail years early and others hold up. A flexible pavement design that works on chalk will rut and crack on clay if the subgrade is not properly assessed. We run the site investigation, measure CBR values, and model the pavement structure so the binder course, base, and sub-base layers actually suit what lies underneath. For a dual carriageway or an industrial estate access road, the CBR road test data we collect on site directly feeds the layer thickness calculation, avoiding overdesign waste or underdesign risk. In a borough expecting continued logistics growth around the airport corridor, getting the pavement right from formation level up is not optional.
A pavement is only as good as its weakest layer, and in Luton that layer is almost always the subgrade.
